We have been working on descriptive writing all year. This is your opportunity to show the class your descriptive writing abilities. Write a paragraph describing (in your own words) an exciting event that occurred in your story. Be sure to provide as many details as possible and provide support by using examples from the story. Remember, make sure your writing is fluid by using proper transitions.
1.) Use as many good adjectives as possible to describe the nouns in your paragraph.
2.) Use as many good adverbs as possible to describe your verbs.
3.) Use as many vocabulary words that you have learned this year.
One part that I found very thrilling is the fire in the church part. I quite enjoy books that have scenes of suspense so this part really grabbed my attention. I don't mean suspense as in "who stole the magical wand" but in a "who is going to live and who is going to die" kind of way. The part where the huge, wooden beam fell on Johnny was probably one of my most worried moments in the whole book and it made me feel quite melancholy and sorrowful. My heart was pounding like a giant drum. The fact that it made the characters seem like heros was one of the many great aspects that made this part very arousing. I, by opinion think that this is the most exiting part in the whole book.
ReplyDeleteA really descriptive peice of writing in the book The outsiders is when Ponyboy, Jhonny and the school children are trapped in the church and it is on FIRE! First of all the words Hinton used were really exciting, and he took bit of a risk by puting stuff like when he describes a burning ember he says "It's like red Hell". Second he added a bit of humor into the paragraph. For example When he is being sarcastic and says that Jhonny was having the time of his lfe saving the children, running in and out of the fire glowing building. In addition he added alot of exclamation marks so when you look at the paragraph you know that it will be exciting. Aslo the way he described them saving the kids was very descriptive because he Said that they "tossed" the kids out the window! Furthermore the part that almost stopped my heart was when Ponyboy gets clubbed across the back by Dally and passes out. That was scary. Finally the way Hinton makes a bunch of characters seem like heros funny and a bunch of words seem, exciting and scary at the same time is really great! I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!

ReplyDelete@ Luna - Be sure to preview your work prior to posting it so that your sentences are more fluid, your capitals are where they should be,your spelling is correct, and your grammar and punctuation are correct. Try not to pack too many points into single sentences as they can become a little wordy if you do this.
I think that one of the more exciting parts in The Outsiders was the epic rumble near the end of the book between the Greasers and the Socs, where the Greasers are triumphant against the Socs, ensuring that there would be no more getting suddenly jumped by gangs of well-armed Socs. In this scene, Hinton depicts a classic Hollywood movie scene, where both sides line up on the fringes between each other’s territory, anticipating the fight as this is the fight, the ultimate showdown to decide once and for all who will reign supreme. In Hinton’s scene, on one side you have the Socs, well dressed, well fred, and look normal. Then on the other side, you have the Greasers, old clothes, enough food to survive, and long, greasy, hair. After a few moments, Darry walks under a dim street lamp, challenging anyone to fight him, and the person to accept his challenge is his old friend, Paul. After circling each other for a few moments, Paul suddenly punches Darry, starting the rumble. When Paul too a swing, everyone rushed in, eager to beat up one another, with Ponyboy being heroicly beat up by one Soc, before Darry helped him, where Ponyboy decided to go help Dally, because Dally had scorched his arm in the fire. Once again, Ponyboy could barely handle the Soc, being constantly thrown off and knocked about in the head. In the end, the Socs beat it, and left, leaving the gang injured, but victorious.

ReplyDeleteI thought that the knifing scene was the most intense. S.E. Hinton left just enough gaps for one's imagination to fill in the grim, gruesome details. S.E. Hinton showed proudly an excellent way sparing the usage of violence. The fact that what horrible thing happened is not revealed immediately greatly adds to the suspense of the passage. When the horror that has messily transpired reveals itself, it does pack quite a punch.

ReplyDeleteI thought that the stabbing scene was the most powerful, because it left enough blanks for the reader to fill in so that it was very tense and edgy. Things seem to be less powerful and scary when you put a name to them, and S.E. Hinton capitalized on that by making the passage seem a bit disjointed and strange. The word choice, or perhaps lack of, made this passage stand out for me.
ReplyDeleteIn this passage, Ponyboy plays the helpless one, and Johnny is the knight in shining armour, and, well, when Ponyboy finds out what transpired... This passage sort of reminds me of the age-old question, "Do the ends justify the means?"
@Charles - Only half as long as usual, but still has deep thoughts only you could think of Charles. I have to say, the part you chose was the exact opposite of what we chose, we chose very detailed paragraphs, while you went for one that had minimal detail.
ReplyDeleteThe storm clouds roll in over top of the greasers as the soc trot over to the well greased greasers the epic duel is about to commence as you see lightning drop to the ground who will win, who will lose... who..will...DIE? The duel begins as Dallas the legendary joins the fight this Part is the most energetic part of the story because of this... Dallas walks over to a soc that he remembers from his past who is this? He is the... guy whose name I forget but anyway they fight all night but they know only one group will win. To solve this major problem one of the socs brake the rules and pulls out a knife he then stabs one of the greasers but this is bad and the others do not like. the Greasers go full out rage with there fists going as fast as the lightning as the socs cant fight back what will happen you say? The pumbled socs jump back into the van and the fight was won. The fight was one. The fight was one by The greasers! !HOORAY!
